Free BuddyPress 1.2 and Above Compatible Theme

Posted in BuddyPress, BuddyPress Theme, Free Themes, Themes on August 21st, 2010 by Icd – Be the first to comment

I started with a list of free BuddyPress themes for 2010 and when I reached number five I found a post that lists 28 Free BuddyPress Themes Compatible with BuddyPress 1.2 and Above… Which made my attempt a bit redundant.  I suggest taking a look at the post and thanking the poster for setting it up, because BuddyPress theme’s are still few and far between.

If you find any new theme please let me know and I’ll put up a NEW Free BuddyPress 1.2 and Above Compatible theme list.

A clean, elegant looking  and fast loading theme for elgg 1.7.1 with light shades. What i tried to do in this theme is to stick on to elgg default looks and to give a clean appearance. I will try funky things from next release onwards.

Ning Alternatives

Posted in Blogging, BuddyPress, BuddyPress Theme, Free Themes, WPmu, WordPress 3, elgg, elgg themes on July 13th, 2010 by Icd – Be the first to comment

Ning created alot of buzz and negative comments due to their sudden switch from a free to premium service. I also had a Ning network, but fortunately never paid much attention to it, rather focusing on other network applications. Some of you weren’t as lucky as me and spent hundreds of hours changing and growing your Ning driven network. Those of you unable to pay for the premium service lost all your users, but possibly still stay in contact with them.

Many of you are now looking for a great alternative. Below I have four free and easy to use Ning Alternatives.

1. BuddyPress:

BuddyPress is a free WordPress plugin which is very easy to setup and modify with available themes and plugins. You will need your own self-hosted WordPress blog to activate BuddyPress.

My BuddyPress Sites : http://livingwordpress.com  (Blogging Social Network and Free Hosting.)http://rugbyshout.com (Rugby Social Network)

2. Elgg:

Elgg is a standalone free social networking script. Setup is easy and they have a great community providing free themes and plugins. You will also need your own hosting account to set it up or you can join the premium service.

3. Spruz

Spruz is the service which I find most similar to Ning. You simply fill out a few fields and you have a social network hosted by them. It’s free and easy to setup and provide plenty of options.

See my Spruz test – http://ayoba.spruz.com

4. Yuku

Similar to Spruz and Ning, but not as easy to use or as pretty. The admin interface reminds me of Joomla, which I never found very intuitive. I would recommend trying Spruz first.

My Yuku attempt : http://ayoba.yuku.com/ (To be honest I gave up in the first five minutes. I’m fickle like that.)

If you have any suggestions for the list OR would like to show us your site, please post it in a comment.

BuddyPress on WP 3 Project

Posted in Announcements, Blogging, BuddyPress, BuddyPress Theme, Free Themes, Plugins on May 31st, 2010 by Icd – Be the first to comment

I’ve recently been working with BuddyPress and used it to setup my first rugby community. I’ve been enjoying it so much I got myself a new domain, awesome hosting package, some friends and setup a new blogging social network. I’m using the BuddyPress Default theme with the Widgetized Frontpage “page template”.

As an extra I decided to use WP 3 RC1 and offer free blog hosting.

Please take a look at LivingWordPress.com and tell me what you think. It’s fully functioning and will hopefully be running for many years, so feel free to register and contribute.

WordPress Theme Download Plugin

Posted in Announcements, Blogging, BuddyPress Theme, Free Themes, Premium Themes, Theme Submission, Themes on May 16th, 2010 by Icd – Be the first to comment

The last couple of days I’ve been toying with the idea of uploading my favorite WordPress and BuddyPress themes and putting them up for download. That’s why I have unlimited space and bandwidth right?

It will basically be like all the WordPress Theme repositories you can find on Google, but with a focus on free premium themes, with easy navigation and pretty presentation being the most important. Keep it simple yet stylish…

So the problem is finding a plugin which will do that for me, a simple “plug and play” option, but to no avail.

So far I’ve found WordPress Theme Showcase.  I would have to edit that to include a download link and use a different folder. The other option is using the ecommerce plugin and just setting up the files as products and add the thumbnail, but such a big plugin seems a bit overkill.

If you have any suggestions for me, please let me know. I’m also thinking about allowing developers to upload themes, where I’ll probably accept one out of five.

Note : I’m also planning on changing my theme this week. Any suggestions in that regard would also be great.

BuddyPress and WordPress Designers

Posted in Announcements, BuddyPress, BuddyPress Theme, Free Themes, Premium Themes, Themes on April 28th, 2010 by Icd – Be the first to comment

Our readership has greatly increased over the last few months, even though I’ve been unable to make posts on a regular basis. What I’ve noticed is that most of the visitors are looking for BuddyPress and WordPress custom designs, not specifically free themes.

What I’m planning is to increase our focus on providing custom BuddyPress and WordPress themes from experienced designers, while still reporting on the latest themes and developments in both area’s.

If you’re and experienced WordPress or BuddyPress designer, please use our contact form or comment box,  if you’re interested in joining the team which will offer custom BuddyPress and WordPress themes at a very affordable rate.

Please supply your working/design experience and supply links to any examples.

Two New Free Elgg Themes

Posted in Blogging, Free Themes, Themes, elgg, elgg themes on March 30th, 2010 by Icd – Be the first to comment

Here’s two new Elgg themes from Juipo.com, which I’m pretty sure I haven’t listed yet. Both are pretty simple, but with new added features like the dropdown menu in the Blackpod theme and a lefthand information panel for users not logged in on your mainpage, with the Red Fashion theme.

1. Black Pod

SEO Friendly Titles: Reversed Sitename and page/item title so sitename shows after page title, Elgg Topbar is removed completely and all items show under header in new bar (except messages), Messages (if any) displayed on left of search, Copyright year in footer automatically updates current year and more.

2. Red Fashion

Red Fashion, Free theme for Elgg. This free Elgg theme features dark red, red and black colors with lots of images. Works on Elgg 1.6.1 (1.5 uses different image styles for message icons), Elgg 1.5 version I will be released soon.

Show us your theme

It’s hard finding all the latest free and premium themes available on the net today. So I’m asking all theme developers and users to do some showing off. Please include a demo and download link if possible, to make it easier for visitors.

Thank you.

Design your own logo’s

Posted in Blogging, Free Themes, Graphics, Plugins, The Web on February 24th, 2010 by Icd – 7 Comments

Many of you out there would like to personalize your products, websites and more with your own logo. Unfortunately for many of us it’s just not that affordable. It’s true, this post does sound like a promotion, but I’m just having a good day.

If you would like to design your own logo’s and don’t have a lot of money and little experience I would recommend using AAA Logo. Below is some examples of a few logo’s I did in about 10 minutes. The software comes with pre-designed logo’s which you can just edit to suit your needs.

If you would like to use any of these images, which I doubt, because they’re branded, just drop me a comment. I can also put up the aaa logo files, which you can then edit. If you’ve made anything nice with AAA logo, please show us.

Extra : I’ve already recieved a request for a custom logo. If you would like a logo designed with AAA logo the cost will be about 20$. Please use the contact page to get in contact with me.
